How to optimize the immune system naturally

immune system

In the search for the cure to multiple diseases, we find ourselves running, singing, and eating for charities that are committed to throwing a dump truck full of money at scientists who then have the monumental task of creating a "nuclear" weapon that can single-handedly destroy the disease in question.

Meanwhile, the most powerful weapon proven to actually eliminate the body of serious disease, the immune system, barely gets an honorable mention as it silently struggles to do its job while generally being treated poorly.

If only we could finally wake up and discover that the answer to removing all disease processes comes from properly feeding and stimulating the immune system. However, taking care of the immune system requires work and effort, often a major hold up in a society that wants everything delivered on a silver platter yesterday.

For those who do want the only proven cure to any disease and to make the transition to healthier state of being, consider the following recommendations to wake up your immune system, and get you locked and loaded for whatever may come your way.

Eliminate the immune system suppressors

The first step to proper immune function is to largely eliminate the worst offenders in its suppression, namely:

- All forms of sugar
- Processed food
- Gluten
- Corn and soy
- Hydrogenated fats
- Alcohol
- Factory farmed animal products (meat, dairy)
- Chemical additives and preservatives
- Heavy metals (fillings, pollution, seafood)
- Medications
- EMFs
- Erratic sleep patterns
- Inactivity
- Stress

Any one of these offenders can severely suppress your immune system. If you engage in several, the compounding effects leaves this system unable to do its job effectively and makes you a willing host to all kinds of viruses, bacteria, and disease processes.

The Dangers of Everyday Chemicals Revealed

It is an unfortunate fact that we are now living immersed in a chemical soup. If you’ve been paying attention to the headlines, many of the chemicals that surround us in our air, water, food, and consumer products may be compromising your health.

This is the focus of the documentary Unsafe: The Truth Behind Everyday Chemicals. Industrial chemicals and pollutants are contributing to illness in the US, especially to certain types such as asthma, autism, ADHD, breast cancer, infertility and miscarriage, Parkinson’s disease, childhood cancers, and birth defects, especially in little boys.

Children are also entering puberty at younger and younger ages; girls are now developing breast buds at age seven or eight. Common household goods and personal care products are major sources of chemical exposure that can cause your body to accumulate a variety of toxins.

Some toxins are avoidable, but many are not, as they are contaminants or simply not listed on the label. Industrial chemicals tend to accumulate in the environment, some persisting for decades or more.

In 2004, the Silent Spring Institute1 tested 120 homes for 89 endocrine disrupting chemicals. They were shocked to find 67 of them, the majority being pesticides and flame-retardants. Perhaps the most surprising finding, however, was that two-thirds of the homes tested positive for DDT—despite the fact it was banned 40 years ago.

6 Reasons I Will Not Give The Nasal Flu Vaccine to My Children

Flu Vaccine

Two of my daughters arrived home from primary school last week with public health packages in their bags. It’s that time of year again, when nurses are out in force like army recruitment officers, waging a war on deadly germs and rounding up volunteers for vaccines.

This year in the United Kingdom the intranasal flu vaccine is being rolled out. It’s already been used in the United States where 14 to 15 million doses of AstraZeneca’s FluMist are currently in distribution for this flu season but this is the first year it is being offered under the brand name Fluenza Tetra in the UK  to all children older than 24 months and it is heavily promoted by public health officials.  They’ve even produced a “Flu Hero” cartoon  directed at children in which a superhero gives a little boy a nasal flu vaccine which, like a bite from a radioactive spider, transforms him into a superhero himself with super defenses.

I hate the flu as much as other parents, but the public health information struck me as superficial and smacked of a sales pitch, so I decided to look a little deeper into the vaccine and here are the top half dozen reasons my children won’t be going near it.

A lot of effort has been put into dispelling the “myth” that you can get the flu from the flu vaccine. Little wonder such a myth exists though, when the listed side effects for the vaccine are exactly those listed for flu: runny or stuffed nose, headaches and muscle aches, sore throat, loss of appetite, chills and fever. It’s not influenza, we’re told, it just feels like it.

But the flu vaccine does contain live flu viruses. According to an electronic Medicines Compendium printout , each vial of Fluenza Tetra vaccine mist contains 107    — that’s 10 million  — of each of four strains of reassorted live attenuated and “genetically modified organisms”—for each nostril. That’s 80 million viruses (give or take) per dose, designed to replicate inside a child’s nasal passages.

These engineered viruses include H1N1 (swine flu), and three other strains that are based on what scientists admit to being best guesses for the most likely influenza viruses in circulation this year.

Live viruses up our nasal passages are dangerous because they can lead to encephalitis or swelling of the brain which, while rare, can also kill and disable people, just like the rare worst case flu. They can also cross the blood brain barrier and lead to long term brain inflammation.

Best Vitamins for Memory, Mood, and Stress

You need sufficient amounts of certain vitamins to improve memory, mood and brain health, and avoid memory loss. Many are deficient. See where you stand …

If a bad memory is troubling you, it’s possible your brain simply isn’t getting the basic nutrients it needs to function the way it should.

Being low in essential memory vitamins can affect your ability to focus, learn, remember, and think clearly.

Your brain needs all vitamins to operate properly, but some are more important for your memory than others.

Let’s take a look at vitamins A thru K to see which are the most crucial vitamins for memory improvement.

We’ll also cover the surprising ways these vitamins affect your ability to handle stress, overall mental well-being, and even how happy you feel.

We’ll also warn you about when you these vitamins can be dangerous and should be avoided.
B Complex: Vitamins to Avoid Memory Loss and More

The “B” in B complex doesn’t stand for brain, but perhaps it should.

The B vitamins can halt memory loss, ward off brain aging, banish depression, and even help you live longer. (1, 2, 3)

B vitamins have been called the “happy vitamins” or “anti-stress vitamins” since they can improve your mood and increase your tolerance to stress.

An important role of B vitamins for brain heath is in the production of the neurotransmitters which are vital for a good state of mind.

If you’re low in serotonin, you may suffer from anxiety, insomnia, low self-esteem, negative thoughts, OCD, and SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).

Without adequate GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), you may find yourself easily stressed, overstimulated and overwhelmed.

Dopamine helps you get focused. A sign that you need more dopamine is relying on pick-me-ups like caffeine, sugar, and chocolate to get you through the day.

New Evidence in the Case Against Pasteurized Milk

Milk is the only beverage still aggressively pushed on children as a health promoting food when it is the exact opposite – a disease promoting food. Drinking pasteurized milk is not nearly as good for general health or bones as the dairy industry has made it out to be. In fact, this fairy tale of “milk doing a body good” is being exposed more frequently by many independent scientists and researchers who have had just about enough of the propaganda. According to a large scale study of thousands of Swedish people, cow’s milk has a deteriorating effect on health when consumed in the long-term. The research was published in The BMJ.

The study, which tracked 61,433 women aged 39 to 74 over 20 years, and 45,339 men of similar age for 11 years, found that the more cow’s milk people drank, the more likely they were to die or experience a bone fracture during the study period.

The risks were especially pronounced for women, a group advised to drink milk to help avoid bone fractures that result from osteoporosis.

Women who said they drank three or more glasses of milk a day had almost double the chance of dying during the study period as those who reported drinking only one. A glass is defined as a 200 millilitre serving. They also had a 16 percent higher chance of getting a bone fracture anywhere in the body.

Why Does Milk Cause Osteoporosis and Bone Fractures

The dairy industy has been hard at work the last 50 years convincing people that pasteurized dairy products such as milk or cheese increases bioavailable calcium levels. This is totally false. The pasteurization process only creates calcium carbonate, which has absolutely no way of entering the cells without a chelating agent. So what the body does is pull the calcium from the bones and other tissues in order to buffer the calcium carbonate in the blood. This process actually causes osteoporosis.

Pasteurized dairy contains too little magnesium needed at the proper ratio to absorb the calcium. Most would agree that a minimum amount of Cal. to Mag Ratio is 2 to 1 and preferably 1 to 1. So milk, at a Cal/Mag ratio of 10 to 1, has a problem. You may put 1200 mg of dairy calcium in your mouth, but you will be lucky to actually absorb a third of it into your system.

Big Sugar's Sweet Little Lies

How the industry kept scientists from asking: Does sugar kill?

Chris Buzelli

On a brisk spring Tuesday in 1976, a pair of executives from the Sugar Association stepped up to the podium of a Chicago ballroom to accept the Oscar of the public relations world, the Silver Anvil award for excellence in "the forging of public opinion.

The trade group had recently pulled off one of the greatest turnarounds in PR history. For nearly a decade, the sugar industry had been buffeted by crisis after crisis as the media and the public soured on sugar and scientists began to view it as a likely cause of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Industry ads claiming that eating sugar helped you lose weight had been called out by the Federal Trade Commission, and the Food and Drug Administration had launched a review of whether sugar was even safe to eat. Consumption had declined 12 percent in just two years, and producers could see where that trend might lead. As John "JW" Tatem Jr. and Jack O'Connell Jr., the Sugar Association's president and director of public relations, posed that day with their trophies, their smiles only hinted at the coup they'd just pulled off.

Their winning campaign, crafted with the help of the prestigious public relations firm Carl Byoir & Associates, had been prompted by a poll showing that consumers had come to see sugar as fattening, and that most doctors suspected it might exacerbate, if not cause, heart disease and diabetes. With an initial annual budget of nearly $800,000 ($3.4 million today) collected from the makers of Dixie Crystals, Domino, C&H, Great Western, and other sugar brands, the association recruited a stable of medical and nutritional professionals to allay the public's fears, brought snack and beverage companies into the fold, and bankrolled scientific papers that contributed to a "highly supportive" FDA ruling, which, the Silver Anvil application boasted, made it "unlikely that sugar will be subject to legislative restriction in coming years."

Research Reveals How Sugar CAUSES Cancer

The average American consumes their body weight annually in this cancer-causing substance, and yet hospitals freely feed it to their cancer patients, oblivious to the harm it does.

Hospitals feed cancer patients sugar and high carbohydrate diets for a reason: they are abysmally ignorant of the role of nutrition in health and disease -- hence their burgeoning growth and packed rooms.

Even though the science itself shows – at least since the mid-20's with Otto Warburg's cancer hypothesis -- that tumors prefer to utilize sugar fermentation to produce energy rather than the much more efficient oxygen-based phosphorylation* – hospitals have actually invited corporations like McDonald's to move into their facilities  to 'enhance' their patient's gustatory experience, presumably to provide comfort and take the edge off of the painful surgery, radiation and chemo treatments erroneously proffered to them as the only reasonable 'standard of care.'

But the times are changing, with new research requiring these medical institutions to reform their dietary strategies, at least if they wish to claim that their interventions are in fact 'evidence-based' ...

New Study Reveals Sugar Doesn't Just Feed But Causes Cancer

A groundbreaking new study, uncovered by one of our volunteer researchers at Greenmedinfo – Jonathan Middleton – is the first of its kind to identify sugar, not only as  fuel source for an already existing cancer, but as a primary driver in oncogenesis – i.e. the initiation of cancerous characteristics (phenotype) within previously healthy cells.

Published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation and titled, Increased sugar uptake promotes oncogenesis via EPAC/RAP1 and O-GlcNAc pathways, researchers addressed a common perception (or misperception) in the cancer research community regarding sugar's relationship to cancer: namely, "increased glycolysis [sugar based metabolis] is frequently viewed as a consequence of oncogenic events that drive malignant cell growth and survival."

Eating organic apples is a healthy, natural way to stimulate weight loss

An apple a day... you know the rest. This old adage has seen its day but is now becoming appropriate again. Several studies are re-examining the health values of bioactive compounds in apples over time. Now, non-bioactive compounds are being discovered to help balance bowel microbiota as prebiotics.

A study performed by Washington State University's Department of Food Sciences observed that apples contain indigestable compounds that created fecal microbial balances in obese mice that duplicated the microbial balance of thinner, healthier mice.

All apples contain these indigestable compounds that pass through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract intact and are not metabolized by the body, allowing them to go into the bowels intact to finally become fermented and help create more probiotic bacteria in the colon. The association to obesity versus normality was obvious.

Several types of apples were used with the mice to determine if there were differences in the influences of indigestable compounds on their colon -- bowel microbial balance. The varieties of apples researched: Braeburn, Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, McIntosh, Granny Smith and Red Delicious.

Granny Smith apples won this colon/fecal microbial balance contest. Though the obesity issue was addressed directly, related preventions against and potential solutions for diabetes and inflammation, the root cause of many autoimmune disorders, are what the researchers wish to "further study" for medical ramifications.

But since most of us already know apples may help reduce inflammation, we don't have to wait. There is only one caveat.

Apples must be organic

Non-organic apples are among the most heavily sprayed produce out there. They made it into the Environmental Working Group's Dirty Dozen. If you know a local apple orchid owner who doesn't spray his trees or put herbicides into the soil but isn't "USDA certified" organic, you may get a better deal through the local source. But will that source provide Granny Smith apples?

Scientists: Organic Food is More Nutritionally Rich Than Conventional & GMO

It’s always interesting when biotech shills spout a bunch of their credentials on posts about GMOs, complaining that there is no scientific proof that genetically modified organisms are bad for our health, bad for the environment, or bad for food sustainability.

But here’s something positive. In researching the true nutrition of food that is grown organically (without pesticides and herbicides, as GMOs are), one scientist that is well respected in her field found some revealing evidence showing how non-GMO, organic foods are better for us. Read on to learn more.

Many GMO-advocates are probably aware of the fact that genetically modified crops contain higher levels of pesticide residues than conventional crops. But what about organic vs. GMO when it comes to nutrient content?

You can argue with a biotech scientist all day long, and they’ll tell you there is no difference, but they are flat wrong. It’s no straw man – there is real evidence that organic produce is better – in a number of ways.

You can blame it on a Stanford study that started this whole debacle. Their meta data did tell us that:
“... Published literature lacks strong evidence that organic foods are significantly more nutritious than conventional foods.”
An agricultural scientist, Dr. Kirsten Brandt questioned Stanford, though, in making this assumption.

She feels that many of the nutrients in plants were overlooked, some were undervalued, and the overall nutritional density of a plant was not really considered based on their criteria. When she looked at their meta-data, she came to a different conclusion altogether.

This Will Make You Stop Cleaning Inside Your Ears

Many people regularly clean their ears with the best intentions of keeping them clean and healthy. However, ears are not designed for cleaning. In fact, they have their own hygienic regime in place, and by sticking objects into the ear, you are only disrupting this natural process. Or worse, causing an injury.

The American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNSF), warns against the use of cotton-tipped applicators and the habit of probing into your ears. On their official website, they connect the over-zealous ear cleaning with the risk of hearing loss.

Ear wax, medically known as cerumen, is a healthy feature of your ears and acts as a self-cleaning agent. It has protective, lubricating and anti-bacterial characteristics. It migrates from the ear drum to the ear opening, cleaning the ear canal, and then drying and falling out. This is a self-regulating process and in normal circumstances, there is no need to interfere. If there is an absence of ear wax, the ears become dry and itchy.

What happens when you use cotton swabs to clean your ears?

When you use cotton swabs, you are actually pushing the wax deeper into your ear, and into the area where it shouldn’t be. It can get stuck and blocked against the ear drum, which can cause all sorts of complications.

Fungus, bacteria and viruses from the outer ear get pushed into the ear and can cause infections, which are extremely painful. Second, if the wax is jammed deep inside the ear canal, it can cause hearing loss. If it gets shoved even further, it can damage the ear drum and result in a rupture.

Should the ears be cleaned at all?

Ideally, your ears should never be cleaned. By cleaning the inside of the ear you are only creating a vicious cycle. Dr. Douglas Backous, M.D., chair of the AAO-HNSF and director of hearing and skull base surgery at Swedish Neuroscience Institute in Seattle, explains that when you constantly rub the skin of your ears, a lot of histamine gets releases. This makes the skin irritated and inflamed. And the more you scratch, the more it itches.

The only time that ear wax should be cleaned is when you’ve been assessed by a doctor, who has noticed wax accumulation (cerumen impaction). The condition presents with symptoms such as earache, hearing loss, tinnitus, itching, odor and discharge. The ear should then be cleaned by a medical professional.

Here's How to Get Rid of a Headache in 60 Seconds

Headaches can sure ruin your day, even if it is the most beautiful and sunny day. This unpleasant condition can easily make one anxious and frustrated. The causes are always different and the intensity often varies.

Before you hit the nearest pharmacy, we suggest that you try three effective tricks that will only take a minute.

If you are one of those people who subconsciously grit their teeth every time they are anxious and stressed, then you should probably know that in this way the muscle that connects the jaw to the temple gets easily tired, which often results in a headache.

To avoid this unpleasant condition, take a wooden pencil and bite it! Yes, it really works. This will relax your jaws and prevent the headache.

If sinusitis and allergies cause your headache, mint is the perfect solution for you. Take some baby oil and add a few drops of mint essential oil. If you prefer using natural products, you can use olive oil instead of baby oil.

Use your fingers to apply the oil mixture on your forehead, and gently massage the temples. Circular movements work best. A minute is just enough, but you can massage your forehead as long as you want.

It is an ancient technique that involves mild pressure on certain points on your body. It is an efficient way to relieve body aches. First, locate the thenar space. It is the area between your thumb and index finger.

CDC now admits Ebola can spread through the air up to 3 feet away

When it comes to trusting the Obama Administration and, increasingly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, no one is making it harder for Americans to do so than the White House and the bumbling gaggle of bureaucrats and political hacks that it employs.

For weeks now, the CDC chief, Dr. Thomas Frieden, has said that Ebola cannot be spread through casual contact -- even as he also stated that persons suspected of being infected should avoid public transportation. President Obama has made similar statements.

Now, after a pair of northeastern state governors imposed (and then rescinded) 21-day quarantines for anyone returning from assisting infected patients in West Africa, word comes from the CDC that the virus can, in fact, be spread to others up to 3 feet away. In a new Ebola-related post that appears to be splitting hairs between "airborne" and "droplet" spread, the health agency claimed:

Airborne spread happens when a germ floats through the air after a person talks, coughs, or sneezes. Germs may land in the eyes, mouth, or nose of another person.

If a germ is airborne, direct contact with the infected person is NOT needed for someone else to get sick. Airborne spread diseases include: chickenpox, tuberculosis.

'Well, at least the CDC is starting to move the narrative'

"Droplet spread," the agency said, "happens when germs traveling inside droplets that are coughed or sneezed from a sick person enter the eyes, nose, or mouth of another person. Droplets travel short distances, less than 3 feet (1 meter) from one person to another.

How Sitting Is Slowly Killing You and What You Can Do About It

It’s funny how sometimes our own amazing advancement can develop a gradual demise. As we progress with technology and policy at a rate that no known species can parallel, we also contribute to negative health without intending to do so. Obesity was hardly a problem centuries ago, when overweight appearance was commonly associated with royalty and comfort. Now, thanks to mass production and a highly profitable market, food is much easier to get and far less healthy. This is obvious to most people, it’s the not so obvious ways our daily lives harm us that come as a shock, particularly one: sitting.

Yes, sitting down could be killing you slowly. If not, it still could be having some serious health implications. The act of sitting may seem relatively harmless. The average American does it for hours at a time every single day. It’s comfortable, it’s convenient, it allows us to focus on our work or binge on Netflix episodes of our favorite show, but studies by medical journals claim too much of it has been linked to higher chances of untimely death.

Think of ourselves as an animal, because essentially we are. Before civilization there weren’t comfortable recliners to lounge in, computer chairs to spin around the office, or sofas to fall into and waste a day away. Biologically, sitting is kind of a foreign activity when taken in the amount we do it, and our bodies suffer because of this. Nearly 150 years ago, people spent nearly 90% of their day moving around. In contemporary society, we lounge on our butts for approximately 60% of the day.

Health Implications of Too Much Sitting

There are many different reasons too much sitting is bad for you, we’ll start with some of the basic and obvious ones.

Hardly a surprise, but many are torn between the “chicken or the egg” concept here. Some claim that more sitting comes as people gain weight and become obese. Let’s consider the root cause of weight gain, however, to put it in perspective: calorie expenditure. When compared to sitting, standing burns about 160 more calories on a daily basis.

There’s no real nutritional or physical science needed here; simply reducing the time spent sitting will reduce the likeliness of weight gain, especially in a society with such available and unhealthy food. There has also been research at an Energy Metabolism Laboratory that suggests a link between sitting and an increased appetite. Sitting not only decreases your ability to burn calories, it increases your tendency to consume them.

4 Illegal Drugs That Can Safely Treat Depression

Next year, if all goes to plan, a dozen patients with clinical depression will be invited to a UK laboratory and given psilocybin – the psychedelic ingredient found in magic mushrooms.

Over the next four or five hours, many of these volunteers will experience dream-like euphoria as colors, smells and sounds become more intense, perception of time distorts and their sense of self dissolves.

Some may feel a surge of electricity through their bodies, sudden clarity of thought or hilarity. Others may experience anxiety, confusion or paranoia. These hallucinogenic effects will be short-lived, but the impact of the drug on the volunteers could be long-lasting.

There is tentative evidence that psilocybin, along with other psychedelic drugs, can “reset” abnormal functioning of the brain if given in a safe, controlled way as part of therapy.

For those raised on the post-1960s dogma that magic mushrooms and LSD unleash mental illness, trigger flashbacks and cause personality changes, the idea that they could actually cure disorders of the brain is mind-blowing.

The pilot study will involve patients who have failed to respond to conventional treatment and is the idea of Professor David Nutt and Dr Robin Carhart-Harris at Imperial College’s Neuropsychopharmacology Centre in London.

They argue that psychedelic drugs could prove beneficial to millions of people and that it is time to end the 50-year stigma surrounding their therapeutic use. Nutt and Carhart-Harris have already used MRI scanners to study changes in the brain while 15 volunteers took psilocybin. A similar study on 20 volunteers given LSD has just finished.
“As a non-clinician, I was convinced by seeing how psilocybin affects the brain,” says Carhart-Harris. “It was quite stark how similar it was to the existing treatments for depression.”
The Imperial scientists are at the forefront of a hallucinogenic research revival and say they have 50 years of science to catch up on. In the 50s and 60s you could barely open a psychiatric journal without coming across a paper on LSD.

Signs You’re Succeeding In Life Even If You Don’t Feel You Are

We all feel like failures from time to time. While this is a normal feeling, you have to find a way to see yourself and your life from a different perspective. Sometimes we ignore the “little things.” Just because you are not a millionaire, don’t live in a mansion, and you don’t drive a fancy car, that doesn’t mean you’re a failure. In fact, it’s quite the contrary.

Here are 20 signs that you are succeeding in life:

1. Your relationships are less dramatic than they used to be.

Drama is not maturity. As we age, we should develop maturity. So maybe your relationships were drama-filled in your past, but if you have moved beyond that, then you are successful.

2. You are not afraid to ask for help and support any more.

Asking for help does not equal weakness. In fact, it is a strength. No person has ever succeeded in isolation. It takes teamwork to accomplish goals. Asking or help is a sign that you have grown as a person.

3. You have raised your standards.

You don’t tolerate bad behavior any more – from other people, or even yourself. You hold people accountable for their actions. You don’t spend time with the “energy vampires” in your life anymore.

4. You let go of things that don’t make you feel good.

No, this is not narcissistic even though it might seem like it. Self-love is success. Love yourself enough to say ‘no’ to anything that doesn’t make you happy, doesn’t serve your purpose, or drags you down.

Cocoa Compound Staves Off Memory Loss

Dried cocoa beans

Compounds found in cocoa beans, which are used to make chocolate, may reverse the normal age-related memory decline seen in healthy older adults, researchers say.

In a new study, people who were randomly assigned to eat a diet high in these compounds, called flavanols, for three months performed significantly better on a memory test than people assigned to eat a diet low in flavanols.

Additionally, brain imaging of the participants who consumed the high amounts of flavanols revealed noticeable improvements in the function of a region called the dentate gyrus, which is thought to be involved in memory.

If further studies support the new findings, researchers could one day produce an off-the-shelf dietary supplements of cocoa flavanols aimed at improving people's mental function, said study author Scott Small, a neurologist at Columbia University in New York.

Flavanols are naturally found not just in cocoa beans, but in tea leaves and in certain fruits and vegetables well. However, the overall amounts of flavanols they possess, as well as their specific forms and mixtures, vary widely.

A recent study in mice found that flavanols increased the number of connections among neurons in the dentate gyrus.

Some Scientists Are Calling This The Second Brain. It’s Very Important To Keep It Healthy

gut brain

Have you ever had “butterflies” in your stomach or a “gut wrenching” experience? You know, that type of feeling that you get in your stomach when you are nervous or excited about something? As it turns out there is a scientific explanation as to why, the gastrointestinal tract is sensitive to emotion. Anxiety, anger, sadness, excitement can all trigger physical symptoms in the gut. There is a network of neurons that line our guts; it is so extensive that some scientists have even nicknamed it our “second brain.”

As it turns out, our gut does a whole lot more than handle digestion and cause feelings of nervousness, in connection with our brain; the gut partly determines our mental well-being and plays a key role in the development of diseases throughout the body. In turn, it has been concluded that a healthy gut helps in maintaining good mental and emotional health –what you are eating directly affects your mental and emotional state.

The gut and the brain both develop from the same tissues, one section evolves into your central nervous system –your brain and the other into your enteric nervous system –your gut. The Vagus Nerve connects these two nervous systems. Some of the same hormones and neurotransmitters that control the brain are also found in the gut! The enteric nervous system (ENS) helps you to sense environmental threats and then directly influences your response. Dr. Michael Gershon author of “The Second Brain and chairman of the department of anatomy and cell biology at Columbia University says: “A lot of the information that the gut sends to the brain affects well-being and doesn’t even come to consciousness.”

Study Finds Probiotics Directly Affect Brain Function

A study conducted by researchers at the University of Los Angeles found that probiotics (beneficial bacteria) actually altered the brain function of the participants. The study was conducted on 36 women between the ages of 18 and 55, they were divided into 3 groups:

Doctors transplanted 'dead hearts' into three patients, and it worked

Two months ago, doctors in Australia transplanted a "dead heart" — a heart that had stopped beating inside a donor's chest — into a 57-year-old woman, reports the BBC. The operation, which has been deemed success, was unlike any other, because for the first time, it didn't involve a brain-dead donor who's heart was still beating.
"when we warm it up, the heart starts to beat."
Normally, heart transplants call for the removal of a still-beating heart that's put on ice for a few hours until it can be placed in a recipient. But two months ago, that didn't happen. Doctors removed a heart that had stopped beating, and placed in a machine called a "heart-in-a-box." That machine then revived the heart by pumping warm blood into it. "We removed blood from the donor to prime the machine," cardiologist Peter MacDonald told WebMD. "We then take the heart out, connect it to the machine, warm it up, and when we warm it up, the heart starts to beat." Once the recipient was ready, the doctors disconnected the warm heart from the machine, and placed it in the patient.

The technique effectively eliminates the current requirement for brain-dead patients. This means it could one day significantly increase the number of hearts available for transplant. It's also far easier on the heart than conventional techniques, because it reduces the number of heart cells that die during the transplant process, and limits the amount of damage caused by lack of oxygen.

The Best Essential Oils For Migraines

Many of us are tormented by chronic headaches or migraine attacks. These hit us when we least expect them and they can make the simplest day task a huge and painful challenge. I’ve already written in the past about top 10 natural tips and treatments to relieve migraine, but in this article I would to talk about essential oils for migraines.

Essential oils can successfully be used to soothe headaches and migraine to get you through the day. But keep in mind these frequent headaches can be a symptom of something more serious and you should discuss them with your doctor to find the underlying cause.

There are many essential oils available that can help you to alleviate headaches or migraine attacks. Their magic works wonders to reduce inflammation, muscle spasm, swelling and pain. Many of them also have a calming effect on your mind and improve blood circulation to your brain. Many of our headaches are caused by stress or other tension-related issues.

Here are essential oils (EO) commonly used to treat migraines:

1. Peppermint Peppermint EO contains menthol which is known for its cooling, soothing and mind clearing properties. It works great to ease tension-related headaches. Its scent works uplifting so best not use during the evening hours as it can interfere with your sleep. Peppermint is your first go-to EO when you feel a migraine attack creeping up. Rub a few drops of peppermint EO, undiluted, on your forehead, temples, and back of your neck at the first signs. Also read my article about top 10 uses for peppermint EO.

2. Lavender Lavender EO has anti-inflammatory properties and has a sedative or calming effect, making it the ideal choice to soothe headaches during the evening or night. The best EO to cure headaches which are allergy-triggered. Can be used instead of peppermint EO at first signs. Also refer to my previous article about top 10 uses for lavender EO.

3. Roman Chamomile - Another great EO to soothe evening or nighttime headaches. It has sedative and anti-inflammatory properties.

How to Make Apple Cider Vinegar Detox Drinks

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is very versatile and has many all-natural uses in food, household cleaning and health. Many health enthusiasts praise the healing properties of ACV to cure almost everything. I’ve already written at the past about the versatility of ACV in in my previous articles about the 10 Uses for Apple Cider Vinegar for Great Health and At Home and 11 Ways Apple Cider Vinegar Can Revolutionize Your Health.

In this article I am to explain specifically on how to use ACV to cleanse and detox and I am going to share with you ACV detox drinks

The Cleansing Properties of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

ACV has great cleansing properties due to its rich content of minerals, vitamins and enzymes. It helps the body to remove toxic waste more efficiently before it has time to accumulate and damage the body. It is known to aid digestion and improve bowel movement. It also helps to detoxify the liver, purify the blood and improve circulation due to its powerful enzymes that break down bad cholesterol and prevent it from clogging your arteries.

ACV also helps in maintaining a healthy alkaline pH level to prevent inflammatory processes in the body that are associated with high acidic level in the body (you can read more about this subject in my article on How to Balance Your pH and Find Out If You’re Too Acidic). It helps to break up mucus and cleanse the lymph nodes and improve lymph circulation which in turn helps to improve your immune system.

There are also claims that ACV helps in weight loss in a subtle way, and while ACV is no weight loss miracle on its own, it can still help you on the way. It speeds up metabolism, helps to break down fats instead of storing them,. It is rich in pectin that helps you feel fuller, and the acetic acid suppresses your appetite and reduces water retention. So combining ACV with exercise and a proper nutrition can help in weight management too.

Which Type of ACV to Use

Choosing the right type of ACV is very important if you want to get the best results. Real ACV is made by fermenting pressed apple juice until the natural sugar turns into vinegar. Always choose organic ACV which is unfiltered, unpasteurized, and unprocessed and not the clear and refined stuff you find in most stores. If you really want to use a good quality ACV, it needs to have the “mother” of vinegar, which is the cloudy matter that floats or often sinks to the bottom of the bottle. This substance contains beneficial enzymes, bacteria and trace minerals that make ACV so beneficial for you. Also don’t forget to shake the bottle each time before using the ACV to distribute the good elements. You can also easily make your own natural ACV – find the recipe here.
