Dads' Age Linked with Kids' Mental Health Problems

Men planning to have kids may want to keep an eye on their biological clock: A growing body of research suggests that children born to older fathers are at higher risk for psychiatric and academic problems.

In a new study, researchers found that the increase in risk of problems may be even larger than previous estimates.

Researchers looked at health data on everyone born in Sweden between 1973 and 2001 (more than 2.6 million children), and compared the risk of various mental-health problems in children born to older fathers to that of children born to younger fathers. The researchers also included comparisons between siblings and cousins.

Compared with children born to fathers who were 20 to 24 years old, the children of fathers ages 45 and older were 3.5 times more likely to develop autism, 13 times more likely to develop attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and 24 times more likely to develop bipolar disorder, the study found. The children of older fathers were also at higher risk for psychosis, suicide attempts, substance abuse, failing grades in school and low educational attainment, according to the study, published today (Feb. 26) in the journal JAMA Psychiatry.

Vicious Cycle of Weight Gain, Inactivity Causes Obesity

Certain microbes that line the intestines, detectable on the breath may contribute to excessive weight gain, researchers find.

Weight gain could be the result of snowball effect, new research shows, with a stint of inactivity leading to a few extra pounds, which then makes it harder to engage in physically activity. This produces a vicious cycle, two studies on inactivity published in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings show.

The first study, published in December, found that obese people engage in less than one minute of vigorous activity per day, on average, and that the typical American sleeps and sits through nearly the entire day.

A second study, slated for publication, has found that Americans now expend several hundred fewer calories daily compared with the number they burned in the 1960s, a trend particularly acute among stay-at-home moms, according to the researchers. For example, mothers who stay home with young children today spend about 14 hours less per week doing physical activity than they did in 1965, the study found.

A team of researchers at several universities conducted the new analyses, led by Dr. Edward Archer, exercise scientist and epidemiologist at the University of South Carolina and a research fellow at the University of Alabama.

The Brain’s Inner Language

Probing the Parliament of Neurons

Clay Reid and colleagues are going deep into the mouse brain to decipher the conversations and decisions of neurons.
SEATTLE — When Clay Reid decided to leave his job as a professor at Harvard Medical School to become a senior investigator at the Allen Institute for Brain Science in Seattle in 2012, some of his colleagues congratulated him warmly and understood right away why he was making the move.

Others shook their heads. He was, after all, leaving one of the world’s great universities to go to the academic equivalent of an Internet start-up, albeit an extremely well- financed, very ambitious one, created in 2003 by Paul Allen, a founder of Microsoft.

Still, “it wasn’t a remotely hard decision,” Dr. Reid said. He wanted to mount an all-out investigation of a part of the mouse brain. And although he was happy at Harvard, the Allen Institute offered not only great colleagues and deep pockets, but also an approach to science different from the classic university environment. The institute was already mapping the mouse brain in fantastic detail, and specialized in the large-scale accumulation of information in atlases and databases available to all of science.

Is ADHD a mental health crisis, or a cultural one?

The reasons behind the rapid rise in diagnosis rates

Any visitor to North Carolina and California will know that the two states have their differences. The former is a typically “red state”; California is staunchly “blue.” Each has certain geographic, ethnic and cultural peculiarities, different demographic makeup, family income levels, and more. Yet perhaps the most surprising divide, one many wouldn’t expect, is that North Carolina appears to be a hotbed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD—especially when compared to California. A child who lived in North Carolina instead of California in 2007, according to U.S. academics Stephen Hinshaw and Richard Scheffler, was 2½ times more likely to be diagnosed.

In their forthcoming book The ADHD Explosion, Hinshaw and Scheffler—a psychologist and health economist, respectively, at the University of California at Berkeley—examine the causes behind the startling and rapid rise in diagnosis rates of ADHD, a neurobehavioural disorder that has somehow become epidemic. In the U.S., more than one in 10 kids has been diagnosed; more than 3.5 million are taking drugs to curb symptoms, from lack of focus to hyperactivity. While ADHD typically hits middle-class boys the hardest, rates among other groups are steadily rising, including girls, adults and minorities. Kids are being tested and diagnosed as young as preschool. In North Carolina, as many as 30 per cent of teenage boys are diagnosed. Scheffler says, “It’s getting scary.”

According to psychologist Enrico Gnaulati, who is based in Pasadena, Calif., ADHD is now “as prevalent as the common cold.” Various factors seem to be driving up the numbers, factors that extend from home to school to the doctor’s office and beyond. “So many kids have trouble these days,” says long-time ADHD researcher L. Alan Sroufe, professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. “I doubt it’s a change in our genetic pool. Something else is going on.”

A closer look at the case of North Carolina and California may be instructive. According to Hinshaw and Scheffler, North Carolinian kids between the ages of four and 17 had an ADHD diagnosis rate of 16 per cent in 2007. In California, it was just over six per cent. Kids with a diagnosis in North Carolina also faced a 50 per cent higher probability they’d get medication. After exhaustively exploring demographics, health care policies, cultural values and other possible factors, they landed on school policy as what Scheffler calls “the closest thing to a silver bullet.”

The FDA Is Considering Creating Three-Person Embryos

The FDA Is Considering Creating Three-Person Embryos

The Food and Drug Administration has this week embarked on discussions on a topic sure to prove controversial: the idea of creating embryos from the DNA of three people.

The Associated Press reports reports that the FDA is investigating whether or not it should allow the new procedure. Current research in animals suggests that the technique, which combines DNA of two parents with that of a third female donor, results in seemingly healthy offspring.

Indeed, supporters of the technique claim that it could be used to prevent children from inheriting some genetic diseases. Those claims, however, are countered by some rather more conservative voices, who have concerns that it could lead to the development of designer babies. Either way, as Michigan State University's Keith Latham points out, this is a process that shouldn't be rushed:
"The end of the experiment will come decades later. It's going to take us that long to figure out the health of the progeny produced from these procedures."
In the meantime, the FDA is gathering evidence from experts in the field before it makes a decision. Those include Shoukhrat Mitalipov from the Oregon Health and Science University, who has so far produced five healthy monkeys using a technique which swaps out defective mitochondrial DNA in the eggs of a prospective mother with those from a healthy donor.

With an estimated 1 in 4,000 U.S. children inheriting diseases due to mutations in their mitochondrial DNA, the three-person embryo could save future parents significant heartache—but the ethical concerns certainly need to be ironed out before that can happen. [AP via Verge]

What Solitary Confinement Does To The Brain

Heavy-set, with a soft-jowled face, King has a distinctly ursine air about him. We first meet at a Wendy’s in downtown Brooklyn, his teddy-bearishness rounded out by a plushy layer of cocoa-coloured velour tracksuit with a matching hoodie, T-shirt, and beanie hat. He is a garrulous, flirty raconteur. He leans in close over the small white plastic table in the corner and shares, in a gravelly voice, his penchant for Dominican women (‘I’ll take one as my next wife’), his distaste for Indian shop-owners (‘They look at you like you in a zoo. Or the bottom of they shoe’), and his love for his two-year-old grandbaby Vanny. But when he talks about his three-decade long ‘bid’ in various upstate correctional facilities, punctuated by periods of isolation in ‘the Box’ – a solitary confinement cell – he gets quieter, and stares away, distracted and angry.

‘I was in the Box a number of times,’ he says, ‘for dirty urine – when they find weed in your urine – and for arguing with the police over dumb shit. I was never there for stabbin’ or nothin’.’ He produces a long, thin Chick-O-Stick from his pocket and begins to chew on the bright orange flesh. ‘I seen some people, they go into the Box with 30 days, and they in that motherfucker for three years because they went off on a police officer; took some shit or piss and slung it on ’em because they had nothin’ better to do. Once they been there a minute, that’s when they start to see shit, harm themselves, harm others. I wasn’t in there banging my head on the wall, screaming and carrying on. I was chillin’, readin’, I ain’t bother no people.’

In the summer of 2007, King spent 75 days in the Special Housing Unit (SHU) of Fishkill Correctional Facility, a 19th-century asylum-turned-prison in Dutchess County in upstate New York. ‘Some rat told a correctional officer I was selling weed,’ he recalls. ‘So they gave me a Tier 3 ticket [a disciplinary hearing for violating prison rules], and 75 days in the Box.’ He found himself inside a 7ft x 10ft concrete cell with a small bed and toilet. It had a solid metal door with a small window made of hard plastic, out of which he could see a catwalk. A few times a day he saw correctional officers walking past, and once a day, a nurse dispensing medication.

Every morning, for an hour’s recreation, a door at the back opened out on to a ‘recreation cage’: a slightly bigger Box with a tiny, barred window. King wasn’t enamoured of the view: ‘A highway, some grass and trees, and sea gulls flyin’, shittin’ all over the place, eatin’ garbage that other inmates threw out.’ He had been in the Box a couple of times before, but these 75 days were the longest he’d ever been stuck there. After a few days, he found himself double-bunked – penned in with another inmate.

Honey & Cinnamon – The Natural Cures & Health Benefits

Cinnamon and honey are both staples in many cupboards, but first off, is the honey you are eating actually honey? And are we aware of the true benefits honey and cinnamon hold?

Is Your Honey Real?

Back in 2011, the FSN used Vaughn Bryant -one of the leading melissopalynologists, otherwise known as experts in identifying pollen in honey, and director of the Palynology Research Laboratory at Texas A&M University -studies over 60 products labeled as “honey” that had been purchased by FSN from ten states and the District of Columbia.

Of all products labelled as “honey,” Bryant found that 76 percent purchased from major grocery store chains, and 77 percent of samples purchased from big box chains did not contain any pollen. If that wasn’t crazy enough, “honey” samples taken from drug stores and fast food restaurants revealed that 100% of them contained no pollen! This means that none of the tested products labelled “honey” found in fast food restaurants and drug stores are actually honey! Full report can be found here

When choosing honey at the grocery store, make sure you read the label and be sure that you are getting a product where honey is the only ingredient. If you can get it unpasteurized, that is even better.

Nutritional Benefits of Cinnamon & Honey

Given that honey and cinnamon can be used quite easily in many meals whether we are making breakfast foods, snacks, sauces or savoury recipes, knowing the nutritional benefits you are adding to your meal might make you consider adding either or both to your next meal.

Honey contains B6, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid and certain amino acids. The minerals found in honey include calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and zinc.

Cinnamon is a good source of manganese, iron, calcium and fibre even in small doses. Cinnamon also contains vitamin A, and vitamin K, but daily values are not incredibly significant.

Health Benefits of Honey & Cinnamon

Along with nutritional benefits, honey and cinnamon also contain several health benefits that should be considered.

Immune System: Honey and cinnamon are great for boosting the immune system, eliminating chronic fatigue and increasing  life span. If our immune system is compromised, we open ourselves up to flu’s, viruses and colds, using honey and cinnamon can help fight these illnesses as well. The antioxidants found in both honey and cinnamon combine to combat the free radicals in the body’s organ systems.

Cell Phone Use In Children & Teens Translates Into 5 Times Greater Increase In Brain Cancer

Cell phone use has undoubtedly become increasingly popular amongst the younger generation with one-fifth of children as young as the age of 8 shown to already own and use cellular devices. An ongoing study conducted in Sweden by the Hardell Group, in association with the International Interphone Study,  shows that this trend could be detrimental as children and teens are far more susceptible to brain tumor development from this exposure.

Cell phone use has quickly become the societal norm for people of all ages to stay connected to one another and the rest of the world. Many of us have become so dependent upon them that it has become more common to see a bus filled with people all looking down at their phones rather than a bus filled with people communicating with one another. As troubling as this trend may be in general, it seems to be increasingly troublesome for the world’s younger generations who are now getting “connected” at even younger ages.

A study conducted by the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center (MARC), which included over 20,000 children/ teens between grades 3 and 12, concluded that approximately 20% of grade 3 students already owned a cell phone. The numbers steadily rose from that point forward to approximately 25% in grade 4, 39% in grade 5  and 83% in middle school.

As wonderful as cell phones can be for both connectivity and as a safety tool for children in case of an emergency, the side effects seem to heavily outweigh these benefits -especially since most children make them a part of their regular life. The dangers of cell phone use gained a lot of mainstream credibility in 2011 when the World Health Organization (WHO) admitted that cell phone radiation may cause cancer. The statement was based off of a cumulative decision made by a team of 31 scientists, from 14 different countries, after reviewing evidence that suggested this to be the case.

The most conclusive evidence thus far however seems to have come from Sweden where the Hardell Group, in association with the International Interphone Study, have found a consistent pattern of increased brain tumors associated with mobile phone use. Unlike many other studies conducted on the subject matter, that which has been conducted by the Hardell Group spans over the course of 10 years allowing for a better understanding of the long-term effects of the devices. Professor Lennart Hardell himself, while speaking at a conference held at the Royal Society by the Radiation Research Trust, revealed that there was a five-fold increase in glioma within people who started to use mobile phones prior to the age of 20.

More Evidence Shows Whooping Cough Evolving In Response To Its Vaccine

Pertussis vaccines seem to require booster shots sooner than they used to. Could evolution explain why?

A young man braves a vaccination early in life.

Whooping cough is evolving in response to its vaccine. Want proof? In a new study, researchers found 30 percent of whooping cough bacteria in Australia have evolved.

We've reported on the evolution of whooping cough before. Researchers have found evolved pertussis, as whooping cough is scientifically known, in Finland, France, Italy, Japan and the U.S. As we previously reported, the evolved bacteria don't seem to be more dangerous than their predecessors. Nevertheless, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are keeping an eye on whooping cough's evolution. It could help explain another recent pertussis phenomenon: The newest pertussis vaccines seem to wear off much faster than older ones, leaving kids vulnerable at age 8 or 10 unless they get booster shots.

In Australia, researchers from several universities and hospitals examined samples of pertussis dating back to 1997. What they saw happening there mirrored what's happened in the U.S.

micrograph image showing (unevolved!) pertussis bacteria

Micrograph of Pertussis Bacteria, 1979

In every country where scientists have found evolved pertussis, the bacteria don't make a protein called pertactin. Pertactin is thought to help un-evolved pertussis bacteria stick to the cells lining people's respiratory tracts. Scientists still have a lot to learn about pertactin, however. "There's still some speculation about that, how it functions in that role," CDC scientist Lucia Pawloski told Popular Science in December.

Could Cooked Meat Hold A Risk Factor For Dementia And Diabetes?

If the results hold up, they could point the way toward new treatments.

Cooking meat may be a risk factor for dementia and diabetes, according to new research. When meat is heated, it can produce advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which form when protein or fat reacts with sugar. The research found a link between high blood levels of these and cognitive decline in adults over 60, as well as reduced insulin sensitivity (a precursor to type 2 diabetes), the BBC reported. Mice fed a diet high in AGEs also accumulated a defective protein in their brains and performed worse on mental and physical tests.

The idea is that a diet rich in AGEs can change the brain's chemistry, at least in mice, according to the BBC:

It leads to a build-up of defective beta amyloid protein--a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. The mice eating a low-AGEs diet were able to prevent the production of damaged amyloid. The mice performed less well in physical and thinking tasks after their AGEs-rich diet.

The mice fed a high-AGE diet went on to develop symptoms similar to Alzheimer’s, such as problems with their balance and coordination, the United Kingdom's National Health Service pointed out.

How Nutrition In One Generation Can Change The Genetics Of The Next

A Cambodian case study finds that people developing diabetes today have parents who went hungry in the 1970s.

photo of museum visitors looking at large displays of photos

Tribute Visitors to the Tuol Sleng Museum view photos of victims of the Khmer Rouge regime. Albeiro Rodas, Cambodia, 2006.

So many adults in Cambodia are getting diabetes at such a young age, it's unbelievable. "You can go to every village with me and see it," endocrinologist Lim Keuky told PRI. "When I go abroad to developed countries, people say I'm lying. I'm not lying."

Cambodians are getting type 2—A.K.A. adult-onset—diabetes in their late 30s. In contrast, the average age of diagnosis in the U.S. is 54. Sure, Cambodians now eat more and do less physical work than they did in decades past. But that's not enough to explain their unusual diabetes rates, PRI reports. Something else is happening.

This new generation of diabetes patients was conceived and born during the Khmer Rouge regime, between 1975 and 1979. Scientists think their prenatal exposure to their mothers' starvation set them up for diabetes later in life. Plus, while the PRI story doesn't explicitly say so, it seems scientists think there may be an epigenetic effect going on, too. That is, being a fetus in a starving mother actually altered these people's DNA in a way that may be inherited by their own children.

The PRI story hints at epigenetics in this quote from Dutch scientist Rebecca Painter:
Animal studies raise an even more worrisome possibility. 'There is a multigenerational effect,' says Painter.
Scientifically, this is really interesting. There aren't many population studies of epigenetics, which has seen a boom in scientific attention only in the past ten years or so. Could the Khmer Rouge generation be another example? If so, that means Cambodian doctors need to be on the lookout for health problems not only in this generation, but the next one, too.

There May Be Plant DNA Floating in your Blood (But That's OK) (Op-Ed)

blood test, plant dna, dna

If you believe this article from Collective Evolution, a site that claims to be “one of the worlds most popular alternative media company”, there is currently DNA from genetically modified plants floating in your blood that must be causing some harm. The conclusion is a wild extrapolation and typical of the anti-GMO lobby, which makes it a good case study for how to treat scientific findings.

The truth is that there may or may not be plant DNA in your blood. The single research paper making this claim, on which the news article is based, is yet to be replicated. But it is more important to note that, even if there is plant DNA in your blood, there is no evidence that it poses a risk to you.
The paper, by Sandor Spisak of Harvard Medical School and colleagues, was published in the journal PLOS ONE in July 2013. The authors claimed to have found the evidence that pieces of plant DNA, large enough to harbour full genes, circulate in our blood.

Circulating DNA is called cell-free DNA (cf-DNA) and the reason for its presence in blood and its function, if any, remains a mystery. The science presented by Spisak is peer-reviewed – that is, it has been assessed by experts in the filed – and seems to have been done in an acceptable way. So I am ready to give their case a hearing.

97 Percent of Europe Doesn’t Put Hydrofluorosilicic Acid In Their Water – Why Do We?

For over 60 years, governments have been adding fluoride to drinking water supplies all over the world. Since then, we’ve seen a dramatic reduction over time as communities all over the world have come together to stop water fluoridation within their communities. Examples in Europe include Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, 90 percent of the UK, Spain, Scotland, Norway, Switzerland and many more. It’s become more obvious everyday that industrial byproducts do not belong in our water. Just to be clear, we’re not talking about the natural element of fluoride here. Over 90 percent of Europe doesn’t fluoridate their water. (4)(5) It’s not just Europe, other countries like Japan, and communities within Australia and Canada have followed suit as well.

It was thought that small amounts of natural fluoride in drinking water would help with tooth formation, but these claims were always referring to the naturally occurring fluoride, never industrial toxic waste.

Despite being dubbed “one of the top ten public health achievements of the twentieth century,” and praised by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, it’s clear that we’ve been subject to manipulation of truth yet again. The United States has more people drinking fluoridated water than the rest of the world combined. Most industrialized nations do not fluoridate their water.

Water fluoridation started many years ago, when asbestos, PCB’s and DDT were all deemed safe. These chemicals have been banned since, when the people woke up, and it seems that water fluoridation will follow the same route. Opposition to water fluoridation has existed since its inception.

“In point of fact, fluoride causes more human cancer deaths than any other chemical. When you have power you don’t have to tell the truth. That’s a rule that’s been working in this world for generations. There are a great many people who don’t tell the truth when they are in power in administrative positions. Fluoride amounts to public murder on a grand scale. It is some of the most conclusive scientific and biological evidence that I have come across in my 50 years in the field of cancer research.” (2) – Dr. Dean Burk, Biochemist, Founder of Biotin, and Former Chief Chemist at the National Cancer Institute of Health.

10 Painfully Obvious Truths Everyone Forgets Too Soon

The truth does not cease to exist when it is ignored.

You know how you can hear something a hundred times in a hundred different ways before it finally gets through to you? The ten truths listed below fall firmly into that category – life lessons that many of us likely learned years ago, and have been reminded of ever since, but for whatever reason, haven’t fully grasped.

This, my friends, is my attempt at helping all of us, myself included, “get it” and “remember it” once and for all…

1. The average human life is relatively short.

We know deep down that life is short, and that death will happen to all of us eventually, and yet we are infinitely surprised when it happens to someone we know. It’s like walking up a flight of stairs with a distracted mind, and misjudging the final step. You expected there to be one more stair than there is, and so you find yourself off balance for a moment, before your mind shifts back to the present moment and how the world really is.

LIVE your life TODAY! Don’t ignore death, but don’t be afraid of it either. Be afraid of a life you never lived because you were too afraid to take action. Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside you while you’re still alive. Be bold. Be courageous. Be scared to death, and then take the next step anyway.

2. You will only ever live the life you create for yourself.

Your life is yours alone. Others can try to persuade you, but they can’t decide for you. They can walk with you, but not in your shoes. So make sure the path you decide to walk aligns with your own intuition and desires, and don’t be scared to switch paths or pave a new one when it makes sense.

Remember, it’s always better to be at the bottom of the ladder you want to climb than the top of the one you don’t. Be productive and patient. And realize that patience is not about waiting, but the ability to keep a good attitude while working hard for what you believe in. This is your life, and it is made up entirely of your choices. May your actions speak louder than your words. May your life preach louder than your lips. May your success be your noise in the end.

And if life only teaches you one thing, let it be that taking a passionate leap is always worth it. Even if you have no idea where you’re going to land, be brave enough to step up to the edge of the unknown, and listen to your heart. (Angel and I discuss this in more detail in the “Passion and Growth” chapter of 1,000 Little Things Happy, Successful People Do Differently.)

Intravenous Vitamin C - A Cancer Killer The FDA Wants Banned

Vitamin C has a broad spectrum antioxidant function with the ability to protect cell structures and DNA from free radical damage. Vitamin C is remarkably safe even in enormously high doses. Compared to commonly used prescription drugs, side effects are virtually nonexistent. No matter how high the concentration, vitamin C does not harm healthy cells. Yet, through an array of enzymatic and metabolic reactions, vitamin C has an impressive ability to protect and treat and wide range of diseases, including cancer. When something is this effective at treating disease, the FDA will stop at nothing to prevent public access.

The benefits of long-term vitamin C consumption in excess of the U.S. government recommended daily allowance (RDA) are widely acknowledged and include reduced risks of cancer, cardiovascular disease and cataracts. Higher-than-RDA vitamin C intakes have been associated with increases in good HDL cholesterol, decreases in LDL cholesterol oxidation, decreased blood pressure and decreased cardiovascular mortality.

The first physician to aggressively use vitamin C to treat disease was Frederick R. Klenner, M.D., beginning in the early 1940s. Dr. Klenner successfully treated chicken pox, measles, mumps, tetanus and polio with huge doses of vitamin C. He used massive doses of vitamin C for more than 40 years of family practice. Many practioners who practice with IV vitamin C consider the treatment more effective than any vaccine ever invented.

Vitamin C particularly has a leading antioxidant role in the intercellular space surrounding each cell. It also has the ability to regenerate and optimize other key antioxidants such as vitamin E.

It is a water soluble vitamin scientifically known as ascorbic acid (reduced form). Its absorption is relatively efficient at 70-90% for low doses. Any excess vitamin C that is not absorbed in the digestive tract is excreted. This prevents overdose by oral ingestion. Humans are one of the few species of animal that are not able to produce vitamin C. We rely on dietary intake to maintain stores. Many people with low dietary intakes of fruits and vegetables have sub-optimal levels of vitamin C. In fact, cancer patients are often shown to have very low levels of vitamin C.

Evidence documents Vitamin C as one of the best antiviral agents now available. Vitamin C can neutralize and eliminate a wide range of toxins. Vitamin C will enhance host resistance, greatly augmenting the immune system’s ability to neutralize bacterial and fungal infections.

A study in the American Heart Journal found that the risk of heart failure increased with decreasing plasma vitamin C; Every 20 .mol/L increase in plasma vitamin C concentration was associated with a 9% relative reduction in risk of heart failure.

15 Plants and Herbs That Boost Lung Health, Heal Respiratory Infections And Even Repair Pulmonary Damage

A wave of viral and bacterial infections is sweeping across the Northern Hemisphere and people are taking longer to heal from an array of symptoms within the respiratory system. If you are resorting to conventional medicine to address these infections with antibiotics, you are not only adding to the problems associated with antibiotic resistance, but you’re also doing little to address the healing mechanisms within your body to address the cause. Herbal remedies not only boost lung health, but they can heal infections and even repair lung damage. Here are 15 of the best herbs to boost lung health.

licorice-1Licorice is one of the more widely consumed herbs in the world. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it occurs in more formulas than any other single herb because it is thought to harmonize the action of all other herbs. Licorice is very soothing and softens the mucous membranes of the throat and especially the lungs and stomach and at the same time cleanses any inflamed mucous membrane that needs immune system support. It reduces the irritation in the throat and yet has an expectorant action. It is the saponins (detergent-like action) that loosen the phlegm in the respiratory tract, so that the body can expel the mucus. Compounds within this root help relieve bronchial spasms and block the free radical cells that produce the inflammation and tightening of the air ways. The compounds also have antibacterial and antiviral effects to them as well which helps fight off viral and bacterial strains in the body that can cause lung infections. Glycrrhizins and flavonoids can even help prevent lung cancer cells from forming which means they can even prevent lung cancer.

coltsfoot-2Coltsfoot has been traditionally by Native Americans for thousands of years to strengthen the lungs. It clears out excess mucus from the lungs and bronchial tubes. It soothes the mucus membranes in the lungs, and has been shown in research to assist with asthma, coughs, bronchitis, and other lung ailments. Coltsfoot is available in dried form for tea or as an alcohol extract known as a tincture.

cannabis-3The toxic breakdown of therapeutic compounds in cannabis from burning the plant are totally avoided with vaporization. Extraction and inhaling cannabinoid essential oils of the unprocessed plant affords significant mitigation of irritation to the oral cavity that comes from smoking. Cannabis is perhaps one of the most effective anti-cancer plants in the world shown in study after study to stimulate cannabinoid receptor activation in specific genes and mediate the anti-invasive effect of cannabinoids. Vaporizing cannabis allows the active ingredients to stimulate the body’s natural immune response and significantly reduces the ability of infections to spread. Vaporizing cannabis (especially with very high amounts of cannabinoids) opens up airways and sinuses, acting as a bronchodilator. It is even a proven method to treat and reverse asthma.

Acetaminophen Use During Pregnancy Linked to Child's ADHD Risk

Headaches strike pregnant women frequently

Children of women who use the painkiller acetaminophen during pregnancy may be at higher risk for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), according to a new Danish study.

Acetaminophen, also called paracetamol or the brand name Tylenol, is the most commonly used drug during pregnancy. For pregnant women suffering from common aches or fevers, doctors often recommend acetaminophen as a safer alternative to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as ibuprofen.

The new study included about 65,000 women in Denmark who gave birth between 1996 and 2002. Using the country's national medical database, researchers followed the children to see how many were diagnosed with ADHD, including a severe form of ADHD called hyperkinetic disorder.

More than half of the mothers in the study reported having taken acetaminophen during pregnancy, and the children of the mothers who took it were 13 to 37 percent more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD or hyperkinetic disorders by the time they were 7 years old.

The researchers also found a dose-response relationship between women's taking acetaminophen and their children's ADHD risk, meaning that the more often a woman took the drug during pregnancy, the higher the child's ADHD risk was. Children of women who reported using acetaminophen for 20 or more weeks during pregnancy had almost double the risk of hyperkinetic disorders, the researchers said. Medicinal Herb Destroys Cervical, Bladder, Pancreatic, and Breast Cancers

ImageBeyond limited empirical observations, not all medicinal plants have established scientific studies to support their effectiveness. However, in the case of Brucea javanica, it is one of those plants in which scientific investigations have provided enough evidence to prove that it has an impressive efficacy for the treatment of cervical, bladder and pancreatic cancers. Its selective toxicity has also been found to kill 70% of breast cancer cells.

Oncologists are still at a loss to find methods of selectively killing cancer cells through the standard protocols of treatment in chemotherapy and radiation. While damaging healthy cells is an inevitable process through most cytotoxic drugs, chemotherapy also triggers them to secrete a protein that sustains tumour growth and resistance to further treatment.

As more knowledge and research is being extended to populations confined to conventional allopathic principles, the broad categories of herbal and plant medicines are finally reaching the mainstream. The effectiveness of medicinal plants and foods to treat cancer is perhaps receiving the most widespread attention. Dietary anti-angiogenic foods alone have sparked so much interest in the cancer community, that even veteran Physicians are beginning to recommend them to cancer patients.

Brucea javanica (Brucea javanica (L.) Merr) is one of those plants that needs far more recognition in this category for its incredible ability to selectively kill cancer cells.

A shrub original from South-east Asia, and occurs from Sri Lanka and India towards Indo-China, southern China, Taiwan, Thailand and even northern Australia, B. javanica has been the subject of hundreds of studies and clinical trials, all of them aimed to better understand two main key issues: First how effective this plant really is; and secondly, if it is so effective, which active constituents are responsible for its anti-cancer properties.

B. javanica is a monoecious or dioecious shrub or small tree that can grow up to 10 m tall with soft-haired twigs and leaves. It prefers open localities such as light secondary forests and thickets, forest edges, ridges, and even occurring in sunny places on sandy dunes and on limestone. It grows under both per-humid and seasonal conditions from sea level up to 900 m altitude.

For several millennia, herbal preparations and natural remedies from B. javanica have been shown to be effective in treating many types of maladies including malaria, and amoebiasis as well as cancer. Approximately half of the drugs currently in clinical use are of natural origin, however many of these drugs become toxic with substantial side effects due to the integration of artificial chemical compounds in their formulas.

2 Centuries of Official Statistics: Proof That Vaccines Did NOT Save Us!

This is the data the drug industry do not want you to see. Here are 2 centuries of UK, USA and Australian official death statistics show conclusively and scientifically modern medicine is not responsible for and played little part in substantially improved life expectancy and survival from disease in western economies.

The main advances in combating disease over 200 years have been better food and clean drinking water. Improved sanitation, less overcrowded and better living conditions also contribute.

This is also borne out in published peer reviewed research:

The Healing Energy of 432Hz - the Tone of Nature

What is 432 Hz tuning?

A=432 Hz, known as Verdi’s ‘A’ is an alternative tuning that is mathematically consistent with the universe. Music based on 432Hz transmits beneficial healing energy, because it is a pure tone of math fundamental to nature.

According to Brain T. Collins, a musician and researcher, the standard pitch (A=440 Hz) does not harmonize on any level that corresponds to cosmic movement, rhythm, or natural vibration.

The greatest musicians, such as Mozart and Verdi, based their music on the natural vibration of A=432.

It’s true that it is only 8 vibrations per second different from the standard tuning, but this small difference seems to be remarkable to our human consciousness.

There’s a growing musical and metaphysical movement for recovering optimal integrity in the music industry and spirituality through the 432Hz tuning. In April 2008 Dutch journalist Richard Huisken founded the ‘back to 432 Hz’ committee, claiming that this original tuning was used in ancient cultures and is found on antique instruments like the Stradivarius violin.

The healing benefits

According to Richard Huisken, music tuned to 432 Hz is softer and brighter, giving greater clarity and is easier on the ears. Many people experience more meditative and relaxing states of body and mind when listening to such music. The natural musical pitch of the universe gives a more harmonic and pleasant sound than 440 Hz.

432 Hz seems to work at the heart chakra, “the feeling”, and therefore could have a good influence on the spiritual development of the listener. Some people who are not able to distinguish the 8hz difference claim they can feel the music warmer due to the longer wavelength.

Because 432 Hz gives a greater clarity than 440 Hz, there’s less need to play it as loud as 440 Hz. This means less hearing damage, as long as you put the volume not too high. Furthermore there’s also less noise pressure. Researchers and musicians, such as Coreen Morsink (pianist and music teacher), report that they feel calmer, happier and more relaxed when playing music at 432Hz.

Music based on this natural tone is more transparent, more marked, gives an obvious musical picture and the overtones and undertones moves more freely. Music based on 440 Hz represents stuffed emotions and blocked energy.

By lowering the pitch by just 8 Hz, you became more flexible and spontaneous. The 432 Hz tuning releases your energy and takes you into a beautiful state, where relaxation is natural.

“This unnatural standard tuning frequency (440 Hz), removed from the symmetry of sacred vibrations and overtones, has declared war on the subconscious mind of Western Man.” - L. C. Vincent

Scientific Studies Show Amazing Herb Kills 98% of Cancer Cells in 16 Hours

Taking in consideration it is one of the deadliest diseases, scientists constantly try to find a cure and finally put and end to cancer.

This herb is one of those cures and it can kill up to 98% of cancer cells in just 16 hours.

Namely, according to the researches published in “Life Science”, artemisinin, a “Sweet wormwood” or “Artemisia Annua” derivative, was used in Chinese medicine and it can kill 98% of lung cancer cells in less than 16 hours.

The herb used by itself reduces lung cancer cells up to 28%, but in combination with iron, “Artemisia Annua” successfully and completely “erases” cancer, and in the experiment this herb had no impact on healthy lung cells.

Artemisinin in past was used as a powerful antimalarial remedy, but now it is proven that this cure is also effective in the fight against cancer.

When scientists added iron while conducting the study, which later attached to lung tissue, especially to cancer infected cells, artemisinine selectively attacked “bad” cells, and left “good” cells untouched.

“In general, our results show that artemisinin stops ‘E2F1′ transcription factor and intervenes in destruction of lung cancer cells, meaning it presents a transcription way according to which artemisinin controls reproductive cancer cell growth”, was stated in the conclusion of the researches conducted in the cancer laboratory at the University of California.

Iron deposits in cancer cells with special receptors which help in cell division. Normal cells also have these receptors, but cancer cells have them in larger amounts and according to this, cancer cells can be target combination of iron and artemisinin.

Taking a daily brisk walk lowers the risk of prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is one of the leading killers among men over 60 years of age. This type of cancer can go for many years undetected, and without causing any serious problems. However, it can also get very aggressive and spread rapidly to other parts of the body. When this happens, it can be very difficult to treat. But there is some good news. It has been proved that taking a daily brisk walk lowers the risk of prostate cancer.

Risks of developing cancer increase with one's age

Age has been known to be one of the major contributing factors to the occurrence of prostate cancer among men. Scientifically, men who are over 60 years are more prone to this deadly disease than those below that age. The disease can be detected very easily when one is approaching 70 years of age. Additionally, other factors that research has shown to contribute to the developing of this type of cancer have been highlighted below.

Men who are obese are more prone to prorate cancerFamily history has also been known to play a key role. Genetics and gene mutations in the family have been identified to cause prorate cancer.Consumption of high fat dairy products and red meat. If one is to fight successfully, he needs to take more fruits and vegetables.Chronic prostatitis, STI, alcohol, and smoking have also been mentioned by many researches to be among the factors that make men more susceptible to prostate cancer.

A daily brisk walk

Research has shown that daily work, coupled with regulars exercise, can have an extensive impact on prostate cancer prognosis. Ideally, a man who engages is some kind of high level physical activity has one of lowest risks of developing prostate cancer when compared to those men who do not actually exercise. In other findings, men with prostate tumors that have more regular blood vessels have a better prognosis than men with prostate tumors that contain irregular blood vessels. Walking has also been mentioned to largely contribute to how regular the man vessels are. Research has shown that men who reported to have walked at a brisk pace had regular shaped blood vessels when compared to men who walked at a less brisk pace.
